A field note for your care search
A prescription does not settle payment.
Ask which medicine is prescribed and why it is being suggested.
The mix-up
If it is prescribed, the plan will pay.
The clearer answer

Take these questions to the plan
Does the medicine list include this exact product?
That list is often called a formulary. Give the plan the full product name and the condition being treated.
Is approval needed before payment?
That step is called prior authorization. Find out who submits the paperwork and where you can follow its progress.
What would I pay?
Ask about your share at the pharmacy and whether the care visits and tests are separate.
What if the request is declined?
Ask for the reason in writing and which review process applies to your plan.
Medicare has a temporary payment program
The body’s GLP-1 signal is linked to blood sugar and appetite; certain medicines imitate it. Source b
Through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, eligible Medicare drug-plan members can obtain certain weight medicines for $50 a month. Source c
For this temporary payment program, the start date is July 1, 2026 and the end date is December 31, 2027. Source c
Bridge payments and approval requests use a separate process from those of your regular Medicare drug plan. Source c
Ask your plan or the person writing your prescription how to request approval through the Bridge.
Eligibility depends on your age, your body weight, your health conditions and your Medicare plan type. Source d
Payment requires both a prescription and approval in advance. Source d
The Bridge is unavailable to people who have type 2 diabetes. Source d
They use the usual Medicare drug-plan rules for their medicine instead. Source d
If that applies to you, ask your plan about payment for your exact medicine and condition.
Under your regular Medicare drug plan, your payments for covered medicines have an annual limit. Source e
Amounts you pay through the Bridge are left out of that limit. Source e
The usual low-income help in Medicare’s drug program leaves the Bridge payment unchanged. Source e
Ask how payment would work for you
Use the Medicare source notes below for the full eligibility terms. Ask your plan or the person writing the prescription which payment program applies to your condition.
For any other insurance, use the same checklist with your own plan. Keep the response with the medicine’s name, rather than just the word covered.
